Why Your Spouse Isn’t Supporting Your Business (and How to Change That)
Starting a business is exciting, but what happens when the people closest to you—especially your spouse—aren’t exactly cheering you on?
It can feel frustrating and even discouraging.
But before you assume they just don’t “get it,” let’s talk about what’s really happening and how to turn things around.
When Your Spouse Doesn’t See the Vision
I had a client who dreamed of starting her own business, but her husband wasn’t on board. He couldn’t understand why she wanted to take the risk, and every conversation about it left her feeling unheard and unsupported.
She tried to explain that building her business would give her purpose and fulfillment, but he just saw uncertainty and change—which made him nervous. So, instead of moving forward, she stayed stuck.
Sound familiar? If so, you’re not alone.
““People don’t resist your dreams—they resist what they don’t understand. Show them the vision, and they’ll be more likely to support you.” 💡✨”
The Real Reason They’re Resisting
Most of the time, when a spouse (or family and friends) don’t support your business dreams, it’s not because they don’t believe in you. It’s because they don’t yet understand how this change affects them.
People naturally resist change, especially when they don’t feel like they have a clear picture of what it means for their life.
Your spouse may be worried about financial stability, time commitments, or how things will shift in your relationship.
How to Gain Their Support
Instead of just talking about how excited you are, try reframing the conversation:
1.Show How It Benefits Them – Instead of saying, “I really want to do this,” try explaining, “This business will allow me to contribute financially, have more flexibility, and create a better future for us.”
2. Address Their Fears – Ask what concerns them the most and truly listen. Then, offer reassurance where you can, whether it’s through a financial plan, a timeline, or a clear vision of how you’ll balance work and home life.
3. Involve Them in the Vision – Let them be part of the process. Maybe they have ideas or skills that could contribute, making it feel like a shared journey instead of a solo decision.
4. Lead by Example – If they don’t believe in your business yet, that’s okay! Take small steps to show them what’s possible. As they see your progress, their support may grow.
